When Ben, an avid cyclist, died of suicidal depression in November, 2009, his family and friends immediately wanted to do something in Ben’s name to help others who might be suffering from mental illness. This is their story and the story of Ben’s Ride.
For this multimedia piece, the content was gathered almost entirely within the span of 24 hours: the evening before the ride when the volunteers gathered and prepared, and the full morning of Ben’s Ride itself. Interviews and comments were gathered during the down times. The core objective of this project is to highlight the fact that this annual bike ride – while still small in scale – is making large contributions to research in anxiety and depression, and, perhaps more importantly, helping to open the dialogue and erase the stigma of such mental health issues within our society.
